Do you want to go to heaven? I’m thinking that your answer is YES! Well, I certainly do too. I have been thinking about what enables us to get there. What is it that “opens the gates of paradise” for us?  THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF JESUS!

It is “the Precious Blood of Christ” that opens heaven for us (cf. 1 Peter 1:19).  Scripture says “they have conquered him (the devil, Satan, accuser of the brethren) by the blood of the Lamb (Jesus) and by the word of their testimony” (cf. Rev. 12:11). Some have taken this to mean that we can overcome the enemy by our personal testimony of faith in what the word of God says that the blood of Jesus does for us.

With that in mind, let’s examine what Scripture says about the blood of Jesus. I have found 20 different verses in the New Testament that tell us what the blood of Jesus does. I have grouped them into four general categories:

1) Redemption from sin;
2) Reconciliation;
3) Purification/Sanctification/Equipping;
4) Entrance to the Sanctuary.

REDEMPTION FROM SIN

It is obvious that the shedding of the blood of Jesus effects eternal redemption from sin (cf. Heb. 9:12). The blood of Jesus is variously termed as granting us “expiation, propitiation, redemption, and forgiveness” (cf. Rom. 3:25; Eph. 1:7).  We are justified and ransomed (cf. Rom. 5:9; Rev. 5: 9; 1 Pet. 1:18-19). We are washed in the blood of Jesus (cf. Rev. 7:14) and the blood of Jesus cleanses us (cf. 1 Jn. 1:7). Through the pleasing sacrifice of the blood of Jesus we are freed and forgiven (cf. Rev. 1:5; Heb. 9:22; 12:24). Scripture tells us clearly: “Without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness” (Heb. 9:22).

RECONCILIATION

One of the effects of the blood shed by Jesus is reconciliation. We read in Eph. 2:13 that those who were far off “have been brought near to God through the blood of Christ” and Col. 1:20 says that Jesus reconciled all things to himself, “making peace by the blood of his cross.” The blood of Jesus brings us closer to God and to other believers.

PURIFICATION, SANCTIFICATION, EQUIPPING

The blood of Jesus is our instrument for growing in holiness. The blood of Jesus can “purify your consciences” (cf. Heb. 9:14). That is to say, it can cleanse us from sin and transform us so that we lead holy lives. The blood of Jesus makes us holy! Jesus was crucified “outside the gate” in order to sanctify his people through his own blood (cf. Heb. 13:12). Another important work that the blood of Jesus performs is to equip us that we may do his will and so make us pleasing to God (cf. Heb. 13:20-21). This is confirmed in 1 Peter 1:2, which tells us that we have been “chosen and destined by God the Father and sanctified by the Spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood.”

ENTRANCE INTO THE SANCTUARY

What else does the blood of Jesus do for us? It gives us “confidence to enter the sanctuary” (cf. Heb. 10:18). When we are covered by the blood of Jesus, so to speak, we are confident to draw near the sanctuary and enter into the Holy of Holies “with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water” (cf. Heb. 10:22). The blood of Jesus is indeed our “ticket to heaven,” giving us admittance.

KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS

The final reference I identified concerning the blood of Jesus is from Rev. 19:11-16. It pictures Jesus as a victorious rider on a white horse. It says that he is “clothed in a robe dipped in blood” (cf. Rev. 19:13). His name is given as the Word of God (cf. Rev. 19:13) and another name is written on his garment, “King of Kings and Lord of Lords” (cf. Rev. 19:16). Jesus is indeed the Victor King, whom we follow in gratitude for the sacrifice of his life’s blood.

RESOURCES

There are two resources Patti and I use often to call on the blood of Jesus: The Litany to the Precious Blood and the Testimony to the Precious Blood.  They are both on our website in the Treasury of Prayers.

Years ago I wrote several verses to the song Sanctuary, emphasizing the blood of Jesus. Here they are for your meditation.

Sanctuary

Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary,
Pure and holy, tried and true.
With thanksgiving, I’ll be a living
Sanctuary for You.

If I’m holy as You are holy,
I will see You face to face.
Melt and mold me into Your image;
Take me to Your holy place.

*Let Your blood, Lord, fall upon me,
As forgiveness, as a shield.
If You wash me, I shall cleansed be;
Say the word, Lord, I’ll be healed.

*Christ has entered the sanctuary;
With His own blood, we are redeemed.
In the heavens, as our High Priest,
With the Father, He intercedes.

*Let us draw near the sanctuary;
Christ has saved us by His grace.
We can trust Him, for He has loved us;
Eyes on Jesus, we’ll run the race.

*Glory be to God the Father;
Honor be to Christ the Lord;
Praises be to the Holy Spirit;
Triune Godhead, be adored.
